Principal's Message

I am Whitnee Verdi, the principal of Cabrillo Elementary, and I’m excited to welcome all of our families and students to the 2018-2019 school year! Cabrillo is a family-centered environment that focuses on the whole child. We have wonderful programs in place that not only meet the academic needs of our students but also behavioral and social emotional needs. Cabrillo is a certified AVID school and we are also a Silver School for PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support).

We are excited this year to announce the opening of the Cougar Center. The Cougar Center is a wellness space where student who are struggling with emotions or behavior can go to experience a calm and peaceful space to help them regulate. In addition, the Cougar Center offers social skills and self-regulation groups to help student gain the skills they need to be successful. The Cougar Center is one of the first of its kind in an elementary school in the state. We are thrilled that our students have access to this space.

As part of our overall focus on the whole child, we have put in place a strong universal mindfulness program. Our students practice mindfulness in their classrooms everyday through a program called Inner Explorer. In addition, our students have  access to a mindfulness curriculum called Mind Up. We are teaching our students the connection between the brain and their emotions and providing them with strategies to help them deal with situations that arise that might cause them stress. Both students and staff alike love their mindfulness time.

In our 4th year of our PBIS program, we continue to teach our students the schoolwide behavior expectations P.A.W.S (prepared and responsible, acting respectfully, working hard and staying safe.) Students are taught the behavior expectations through classroom lessons and are positively reinforced with PAW tickets when they demonstrate practicing P.A.W.S. These tickets can be turned in for a variety of prizes and activities. At Cabrillo we love practicing our P.A.W.S!

Cabrillo continues to focus and provide strong academic first instruction. All students receive instruction in ELA and Math using our newly district adopted materials. In addition, for ELA all students participate in Cougar Club Time. This is a time during the day where all students move to different teachers to receive specific instruction to meet their individual needs. This strong intervention and enrichment program has helped our students reach their full potential.  This our third year of Cougar Club and we are seeing great growth schoolwide in ELA!

I look forward to working with you and having another fantastic year at Cabrillo!
