Principal's Message

Welcome to Cabrillo Elementary!

I'm very excited to be starting my second year here at Cabrillo Elementary. Cabrillo is an exciting place where ALL students are given the opportunity to learn and reach their full potential. Here at Cabrillo we are committed to providing a safe environment where scholars will become responsible, respectful and confident lifelong learners.

This year we will be fully implementing the PBIS System. PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is a multi-tiered prevention framework that provides evidence-based interventions to meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of all students. The outcome of this framework is for ALL students to learn and do well academically, behaviorally, and social-emotionally. PBIS creates an effective and equitable environment by redesigning learning communities and making them safe, positive, consistent, and predictable. As part of PBIS, we will be implementing our new behavior expectations, P.A.W.S. which stands for Prepared and Responsible, Acting Respectfully, Working Hard, and Staying Safe. These behavior expectations will be put in place for all students and represent what is expected of students here Cabrillo Elementary. We are very excited for full implementation of PBIS this year and growing our positive environment for our students!

In addition, we will be starting our year 2 implementation of AVID for grades 4-6. The AVID program transforms instruction, systems, leadership and the culture of a school to ensure college readiness and improve academic performance for all students. We will continue to drive our college culture at Cabrillo and will be focusing on key strategies such as organization, effective note-taking, and a more rich and rigorous learning experiences for our students.

We will be working hard this year to make literacy at top priority for our students. We will be putting in place Cougar Club, a block of time during the day where all students will be receiving intervention/ enrichment designed to meet their individual needs. It is our goal that ALL of our students receive the instruction they need to be successful not only at Cabrillo but for years to come.

At Cabrillo, we want to encourage our parents to get involved with their child’s education and we have created many opportunities to partner with our parents. We will continue our Watch Dog Dad’s program for 2016-2017 and encourage our dads and father figures to sign up to participate in our very successful program. In addition, we would like to ask our parents to sign up for our PTA (Parent Teacher Association). It is our PTA that help fund things like our Harvest Festival and Spring Family Night. We know that it takes a team to successfully educate a child and we look forward to even more opportunities to work more closely with our parents and community this year. Have a great 2016-2017 school year.
